Why Every B2B Marketer Needs to Understand n8n
LLMs, MCPs, and AI agents — what each layer actually does, and how n8n ties them into workflows that replace costly human capital where it counts.

The three layers
LLMs — the AI brain. It reads, thinks, and writes like ChatGPT or Claude. It understands and generates language, but on its own it just responds — it doesn’t act.

Think of it as a universal plug that lets the AI brain talk to outside systems without custom glue code every time. In practice, it’s what lets Claude or GPT pull a live Salesforce record or read a webpage mid-conversation.
AI agents — the autonomous worker. An agent wraps an LLM with the ability to plan and take action across multiple steps. It decides what to do next, calls tools, checks results, and keeps going until the job is done. In n8n, your agent node is the orchestrator: it might receive a new inbound lead, look them up via Apollo, research their company, draft a personalized outreach email, and log the result to Salesforce — all without you touching it.
How Does n8n Tie into These Concepts?
An n8n workflow can include as many or as few of these tools as the job requires. If you want an LLM with better reasoning, choose something like Opus 4.5/4.6 — the API costs and tokens will be far higher, but you can be more assured the decision was carefully reasoned through. If you rely entirely on a smaller model for complex cognitive work, you’re inviting failure into your workflow.
This leads to my next point: these workflows function best when the input is high-quality data, which the workflow can analyze and transform into something else entirely, in areas where human capital would be far too costly.
Finding this Goldilocks zone — where you’re not sinking in API costs but applying enough reasoning, with the correct tools, all prompted to perfection — is exactly what an n8n workflow is all about.
